The City of Overton is located in Smith and Rusk Counties in Upper East Texas on Highway 135. The Smith County portion is part of the Tyler Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the Rusk County portion of the city is part of the Longview Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town was named after Major Frank Overton, an early settler and landowner who donated land for the town site. It was platted in 1873 and a post office was granted that same year. Now, in 2023, Overton is celebrating its 150th anniversary!
The city is situated east of Tyler, northeast of Arp, northwest of Henderson, and southwest of Kilgore. To the west lies Lake Tyler.

Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East, situated adjacent to each other and connected via a canal, are located just west of Overton, Texas.
These are the largest lakes in the Tyler area in addition to Lake Palestine.
The two lakes cover nearly 5,000 surface acres and serve as the major water supply source to the Tyler metro area.
