We live in Texas, and love the many good things about life here. Like having fun, and EATING!
Texans love to eat, whether it be at home or one of the thousands of restaurants all across the Lone Star State.
And the list of popular menu items is a long one. But in this report we narrow the list down to only 20 dishes. We started with some of our favorites and added more voted by the viewers of this website.
So here's our "Texas Menu" for 2024!
Our Favorite Meal: Breakfast! |
DonutsGlazed or chocolate-covered ... great ways to start off the day in Texas! |
Cinnamon RollsWe try to eat healthy, but at times nothing tops a thick, warm cinnamon roll, with lots of sugar coating of course. |
Classic Breakfast: Eggs, Bacon, Grits and ToastWe never go wrong with a hearty breakfast of eggs, either scrambled or over-easy, along with grits & butter, bacon and toast. |

Boiled CrabsThere is lots of fresh seafood available from the Texas Gulf Coast, like these crabs ... beautifully boiled and seasoned. |
Boiled Gulf ShrimpWe love to boil, and eat Gulf Shrimp ... but never any imports! |
Boiled CrawfishA popular Texas tradition is the crawfish boil, including small potatoes, corn on the cob and onions. Boiling crawfish is an event and social gathering not to be rushed, but to be enjoyed with family and friends! |
Fried CatfishA long-standing Texas staple, thinly sliced, usually served with French-fried potatoes, cole slaw and hush puppies. |
Seafood GumboFilet gumbo, with shrimp, crawfish, crab meat and rice ... a meal that just cannot be beat on a cold Texas winter day. |
Bar-B-CueIt's a standard food group in Texas: BBQ! Brisket, turkey, sausage and chicken ... all GOOD! We cook our own at home, and dine at popular restaurants like "Stanley's Famous Pit BBQ" in Tyler. When we are in the Austin area, we often dine at Franklin Barbecue and the Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood. |

Fried ChickenCrispy fried chicken, always a favorite, either cooked at home or purchased from several popular Texas chicken outlets around the state. |
Chicken-Fried SteakOh, yum! A perennial favorite, smothered with that thick white gravy. |
The CheeseburgerThe standby, the "old faithful" ... genuine Texas beef, lettuce, tomato and melted cheese on a thick bun. We make a fine burger at home, and of course enjoy those from Texas' own What-a-Burger. |
Grilled SteakGrilling and eating steak ... always a favorite in Texas. Some are larger than others, like the 72-oz at the Big Texas Steak Ranch in Amarillo. |
Beans, Tortillas & More |
Red Beans & RiceRed beans and rice, with some sausage thrown in ... a wintertime fav. |
Chili Con CarneChili, with beans, topped with grated cheese and sour cream ... we can taste it now! |
Tex-MexWe never tire of enchiladas, tacos, rice, pintos & cheese and more! |
Sides |
Deviled EggsA delicacy that we don't get often enough. |
Mashed Potatoes & GravyA great side dish with many meals ... gently mashed potatoes covered with a helping of gravy. |
Dirty RiceWe learned to love this in our early years in Louisiana ... and still enjoy it today here in Texas! |
Dessert |
Lemon PieThere are sooooo many favorite pies: pecan, strawberry, peach, banana creme and more. But lemon often tops our dessert list! |
One last favorite - "Texas Frito Pie" |
